    Wireless Help Please...

I am completely new to Linux, so excuse anything stupid I might be missing. Anyways, I just installed Linux on 3 of my laptops, and I'm having trouble enabling wireless on my oldest one. I tried to go through the tutorials, but it looks like my adapter should be supported, yet I can't get it enabled. Here is my information. Anything that I didn't understand I just pasted everything that the instructed command gave me.

Thanks for the link, I'll try that out.

Yes I have both of my other laptops running the same version of Ubuntu and have them on wireless.

When searching this is actually your wireless card

    description: Network controller

The other device mentioned is your ethernet controller. Will search for other information also.

This really "sticks out" in your listing

I believe that is more of a problem with dual-booting; I am not dual-booting, but I tried the steps on that link... no dice.

I saw that too... I tried to run the command "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter" in the terminal, but it is saying that it can't find the package.

You might take a look at the links on this thread where someone else is having trouble with the Broadcom 4318:

Ya, I saw that thread and tried all of that stuff, but it doesn't seem to help. Maybe because those are all for older versions of Ubuntu? Not sure.

It looks like you've got most of the Broadcom b43 modules loaded (the stuff in blue above).

That one thread I linked to was for ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), and I've actually had much better luck with that than 9.10 on 3 or more laptops now.

You've got a Realtek 8139C ethernet interface (that 8139 too, 8139c stuff below the blue wireless modules above)- do you have a working cable connection?

I vaguely remember something about needing to blacklist one of the modules ("ssb" I seem to recall, when I was trying to set up wireless under a non-ubuntu version of Linux on my Broadcom 4321AG WiFi). I ended up just using ndiswrapper for a while, since the 802.11(n) support isn't/wasn't very good for my 4321AG. Then Broadcom released their proprietary "STA" driver, and that has worked extremely well for me (but is slower now than it used to be- this IPv6 problem it sounds like).

This was the original website I found the information about that b43 driver at- you probably want to read through some of that- it mentions the 4318 and that it is better supported there than my 4321AG is:

    http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

    Here is their download page:

    http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download

If you end up re-compiling the b43 driver from those sources, you might need to install the kernel header files first for the version of kernel that you usually run. I can elaborate on that if you need me to, but you should be able to install those or check their status from the Synaptic Package Manager under the Administration menu.

One thing that I've heard works for some is to go into the Hardware Drivers (also under the Administration menu) and disable the proprietary b43 driver. Wait a while (or else restart the ubuntu) and then re-Activate the b43 driver. This has worked for some people with both the b43 and the STA driver (that my 4321AG seems to like). You might need a 2nd reboot to see the wireless interface after Activation.

If you want to try the STA driver, you can download that directly from Broadcom at:

    http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

Post #9 at this thread is for a 4318 that someone got to work with the proprietary b43 driver under 9.10:
