Lost my driving wheel

Well, maybe not my driving wheel, but all of a sudden I can't connect to my news group server via BinBot (news.west.cox.net -open access to all) and IPBlock also cannot connect to any of the myriad update servers on the list. Obviously my internet connection is fine. Where should I be looking for the problem?

I don't know if this helps, but I just tried that news server address and it wanted a user name and password. I'm not on Cox cable, but that server is no longer "open".
