Sound stopped working .. Ubuntu 9.10 HELP!!

first off .. I'm very new to Ubuntu and linux (switched from vista a week ago)so respond like you're talking to a newbie


THE PROBLEM..
the sound was working fine when I installed (dual booted) ubuntu 9.10 a week ago up until today. I turned on my machine (VAIO laptop) and logged on today(startup sounds did not play). no sound is coming from any application I open either. The problem is not the speakers or hardware (works on the vista boot still)

The only things I could find on searches (google/forums) deals with 8.10 upgraded to 9.10 or sound not ever working since install, but mine did work up until today..

HELP!! .. I love Karmic but music is my life!

This is a serious problem, I'm considering going back to bleh windows

ran alsamixer, nothing is muted .. all sound levels are fine
