Angry 9.10 "Bluetooth is disabled" Dell M90

Hey all - I don't think I've tried to use Bluetooth under Ubuntu yet and wanted to today. No joy.

Bluetooth is enabled in bios, its indicator light near the keyboard is on and toggles with the keyboard hotkey, but Ununtu "Bluetooth Preferences" just tells me "Bluetooth is disabled" and hitting the cooresponding "Turn On Bluetooth" button doesn't do much of anything.

Here's some output relevant commands I found in other threads:

    Code:
    cbraddock:/home/cbraddock:cat /var/log/dmesg | grep Blue*

    Please let us see:
    Code:
    rfkill list
    rfkill unblock all
Does your bluetooth now work as expected?

I have a slight suspicion that this may be caused by another culprit. If unblock doesn't work, please try:
    Code:
    sudo rmmod -f dell-laptop
    Now is it fixed?

Whatever of these works, if any, we can make permanent.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Code:
    cbraddock:/home/cbraddock:rfkill list
    0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    1: dell-bluetooth: Bluetooth
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    3: phy0: Wireless LAN
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    15: hci0: Bluetooth
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    cbraddock:/home/cbraddock:
I was guessing since both blocking options in the above output read, "no" that unblock wouldn't do anything which seems to be the case. Also the rmmod command did not seem to make a difference.

I am out of ideas. I wish I knew more. I hope someone else will pick up the ball.

    Hmm, would you believe
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start
    does the trick?

Not sure why that isn't running @ boot time by default. It's possible I disabled it manually at some point. Now I have to go figure out how to undo that...

EDIT: I think I like sysv-rc-conf for the last bit of the job.

rfkill had no effect for me, but rmmod cleared the problem.

This is with a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Karmic Koala 9.10.

Thanks - my mouse works again!!

Re: 9.10 "Bluetooth is disabled" Dell M90

I have Ubuntu 9.10 running on a Dell Inspiron E1705. I okayed a Kernel Update yesterday from 2.6.31-22.63 to 2.6.31-22.65 and now my bluetooth won't work. It is showing all of the symptoms that 'chrisbraddock' had but neither of the solutions presented:

    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start
    (mine is already running)

    OR

    Code:
    sudo rmmod -f dell-laptop
(this caused my bluetooth adapter to become undetectable until I restarted the computer)

work for me. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: 9.10 "Bluetooth is disabled" Dell M90

I installed a previous version of the Kernel 2.6.31.21 with which the Bluetooth used to work. It was having the same problem. I also remember (not definitively) the bluetooth working for a few hours after the Kernel update so I am forced to conclude that the kernel update is not responsible for the problem.

Any help guys? I am completely at sea here.
