weird popping sound from speakers

whenever i plug in some headphones to my laptop, my computer will begin producing a popping noise every couple of seconds from both the speakers and my headphones at the same time. it goes "pop"............"pop pop pop". the only way to get it to stop is to restart or put my laptop into standby and turn it back on. this only happens in ubuntu.

specs: ubuntu 9.10 32 bit

I have one system that does this. it is a Desktop. I have noticed it only does it when the Hard Drive has activity.

once i play something else the sound stops. when i stop the popping starts back though. thats the only way to get it to stop other than restarting.
