i like Thunderbird, really i think it comes down to a personal prefrence.

That mostly what it comes down to. If you need a calender integrated into the mail app, then Evolution is best. But if that does not matter, then it is preference.i like Thunderbird, really i think it comes down to a personal preference.

My older version of Evolution kept stucking, I find Thunderbird more stable + I also use calendar with it.
I used to use the desktop applications but can not stress how great Gmail is... I backed all my emails up a couple years ago from my desktop app to Gmail using IMAP and now I don't have to worry about losing it all if a Hard Drive were to fail or anything and Gmail's Web App is very clean, appealing, and useful.
If you think you can I'd recommend the swap. Also a great thing is I can have my emails easily synced from phone to computer and also my contacts.
Great Stuff.

If you have to use a Desktop App I think I enjoyed Evolution better. I'm not a huge fan of Mozilla... mainly for design reasons.
Thunderbird definitely. Make sure you grab the latest 3.0, it has much improved design & usability. Thunderbird 3 is a very sleek application comparison to Evolution.

Thunderbird for me. As I click on each email, the window below responds almost instantly with Thunderbird vs substantive delay with Evolution. It can become bothersome to me over time.
I also like to have a home page for Thunderbird (a spiritual thought for the day). I don't have that feature with Evolution.
That said, I can live just fine with both.
Thunderbird anytime. Evolution is a royal pain. Still can't get the thing to receive emails. Wish they would make Thunderbird default instead of Evolution.

Like Sef said, depends on what you want. And if it's just the e-mail you want and no other features it's simply a question of personal preference.
I actually use Thunderbird on every other system but on Ubuntu I prefer Evolution because of it's calendar and better integration with Gnome desktop. (I've never had any stability problems with either one,and I've found both apps to be equally easy to use.)
If you can't decide, try them both yourself to see which one you like more.

I liked Thunderbird as it made it easy to convert from windows. I set up thunderbird on windows and got my wife used to it. then I put the profiles into a share FAT (now NTFS) partition and whichever system we are in all the data is the same. We went from mostly XP to about 90% Ubuntu. One or two applications to go and we will be 100%. I just got Picasa 3.6 working in wine. One more app to go.
