    [SOLVED] Intel (ICH9 Family) on an HP Laptop

    So I'm running karmic on an HP G71 laptop. Was wicked impressed... wireless worked out of the box... but sound still isn't working.

    I tried to follow the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide, but got stuck on step 3.

    (3) Check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ and search for your sound card (chipset) manufacturer in the dropdown box.
    The link is bogus. No dropdown box in sight.

    Anyways, if someone could help me to continue on with the guide, offer any suggestions based on the provided info, or get me to provide more info... that would be great. (I've heard good things about ubuntu community... one of the reasons for switching to it from openSUSE)

    SOLUTION:
    I found it here. Apparently I just needed new alsa drivers, which were real easy to install.

    Also I commented out all of the options I added to the alsa-base.config file, they weren't needed. Thanks everyone!

    I noticed you are using a intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

    To get sound working you need to add;

    options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
    in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

    so; open up a terminal ;
    typ;
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
    and copy paste the options from above in it at the bottom of the file; save your file, reboot and all should be working.

    When your thread it solved: go to thread tools > Mark this thread as solved
    for SIS 771/671 use xcompmgr to have transparent terminals. just load it at startup.

    And then they asked: what's a pbkac error?

    I added those lines to the file... just like you said, and then rebooted. Now for some reason my sound device isn't showing up...

    I appreciate the help but I'm in a worse spot now than I was before. The (restoring to default card settings) link is that comprehensive guide I linked to in my original post. Like I had said, step 3 is useless because the link is dead/wrong... thus I can't figure out what driver I should be using.

    lspci -v still shows my card.

    Do you know what driver I should use?

    snd-hda-intel is the driver you should use. It appeared to be loaded properly in your earlier post:
