yes you got it right. Check your volume levels again in alsamixer. if that doesn't fix it I'm at a loss for the moment.

Everything is at max. I even went and installed my motherboards audio drivers just now, and still nothing.

Wow my sound is totally borked now. I tried to get esound because people with similar problems had them with pulseaudio. Now I cant even get into my system - preferences - sound, and it gives me a message saying "Waiting for sound system to respond."
