    hwmon / pwmconfig problem - not persistent configs

    Hi all ubunthusiasts! I've been using ubuntu for a few years now, and been able to solve almost any problem I have encountered because of all you helpful people at these forums. However now there is something which I have not found a solution.

    I have installed lm-sensors and have ran pwmconfig to set my cpu fan speed.

    So, after I ran pwmconfig it wrote to /etc/fancontrol/ this:

    Code:
    # Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost
    INTERVAL=5
    FCTEMPS=hwmon1/device/pwm2=hwmon1/device/temp2_input
    FCFANS= hwmon1/device/pwm2=hwmon1/device/fan2_input
    MINTEMP=hwmon1/device/pwm2=45
    MAXTEMP=hwmon1/device/pwm2=60
    MINSTART=hwmon1/device/pwm2=110
    MINSTOP=hwmon1/device/pwm2=105
    MINPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm2=0
    MAXPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm2=255
    Everything fine until now. Fancontrol was up and running, and I reduced the noise as I wanted. BUT THEN, after reboot it doesn't work. My cpu fan runs again at full speed. I have to manually change the /etc/fancontrol/ to this:

    Code:
    # Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost
    INTERVAL=5
    FCTEMPS=hwmon0/device/pwm2=hwmon1/device/temp2_input
    FCFANS= hwmon0/device/pwm2=hwmon1/device/fan2_input
    MINTEMP=hwmon0/device/pwm2=45
    MAXTEMP=hwmon0/device/pwm2=60
    MINSTART=hwmon0/device/pwm2=110
    MINSTOP=hwmon0/device/pwm2=105
    MINPWM=hwmon0/device/pwm2=0
    MAXPWM=hwmon0/device/pwm2=255
    So I change the hwmon1 to hwmon0 and restart fancontrol, and it works again. But after a reboot again, I have to change again hwmon0 back to hwmon1. So it is not persistent.

    my /etc/modules/ looks like this:

    Code:
    # /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
    #
    # This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
    # at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

    lp

    # Generated by sensors-detect on Tue Dec  8 17:24:00 2009
    # Chip drivers
    w83627ehf
    k8temp
    btw, it doesn't change at every reboot. It doesn't follow any pattern, it may work 3 or 4 reboots, but always at some point the change happens.

    What could be the problem? I know this is not a big problem, but still annoying.

    Thank You in advance!

    The kernel may be incorrectly identifying your hardware on some reboots.

    You need to report this as a bug:

    Code:
    ubuntu-bug pwmconfig

    Weird, I don't have package named pwmconfig - it's not even in my repositories! Could this be related to the problem..?

    edit: thanks for a quick reply!

    Just wanted to say, that I've been having exactly the same problem since 3-4 weeks. Will keep you posted if i find a nice workaround...

    I've the same problem with you since I installed karmic. I've searched the net but can't find any solution. However, I know that the program pwmconfig is in the package lm-sensors.

    I've found a workaround. Since the module k8temp is not necessary, we can blacklist it.

    1. Remove the line k8temp in /etc/modules.
    2. In the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, add the line "blacklist k8temp"

    It should work.

    This behaviour has been reported as part of "it87 (sensors) module broken, needs automatic adding of a kernel line during installation - bug #418246"

    I'm hoping that the blacklist of the k8temp will help quell the insanity a touch.

    Confirmed working on karmic 64 with sensors3.1.1!

    I didn't have reference to k8temp in modules, but blacklisting it did the trick - now it87 is reliably hwmon2 and my asus ATK0110 acpi module is hwmon1.

    Hooray! Thank you chung. Mods - consider switching topic to "solved"?

    Thank you very much, chung! Now it works.
