CD/DVD slot drive problems

I've just fitted a Matshita (Panasonic) UJ-875S which I transplanted from a USB caddy. Works well except for some issues:

1. Eject keyboard shortcut does not work unless I unmount first
2. I can't always browse the media from Nautilus
3. Rhythmbox sometimes refuses to play CD's and then won't play any files complaining: "Failed to open output device", but I can make Totem play it as well as gstreamer from a command line

I never had these issues with the last drive (LG drawer type).

I'm using Jaunty.

EDIT: Logging out and in again solves the playback issue and the eject issue, but ejecting and reinserting causes the issue again.
