What is your recommendation for the best text editor in Karmic Koala?

I am leaving behind Windows and am starting up in Ubuntu 9.10. There are several freeware very good text editors in the Windows side of things, e.g. psPad. I could try wine and run psPad there.

But if I am going to become a full-fledged linux user, it makes sense to use programs that run in linux. I am aware of gedit. I want to know if there are others and what people think of any alternatives.

Thanks for your thoughts and replies.

    Tom

JEdit, Scite, Mousepad ( speed! ), etc. - just do a search for one in packages.ubuntu.com or Software Center ( I don't use it so I'm not sure whether you can search for something like that or not ).

+1. Nano if I'm doing stuff in terminal, gedit for the rest.

Some people rave about vi/vim. Never seen the attraction myself. But if you want to learn vim, you may find this tutorial useful.

Welcome aboard. I have been using various flavors of Ubuntu for several years and gedit fills my needs.

Agreed; vim is de facto. It's always there for you and can do pretty well anything you could possibly want. For the graphical guys, there's gvim.

    Hurray!

I looked at a lot of text editors when I started using Ubuntu, but I always come back to gedit. Don't forget to check out all the plugins. There's some cool stuff there.
