Angry Copying files fast then pauses for a long period

I have recently installed 64bit ubuntu on my quad core intel PC.
One problem that I am having is copying files. The file transfer is VERY quck, you can see the file appear in the new nautilus window and nautilus even produces a preview image for it very fast. The problem is that when copying files there is a LONG pause/delay/halt after the file seems to have copied successfully.

This is not the case when moving files. When moved the files copy as fast as when they copy, but the 'file operations' dialogue clears very quickly.

This only seems to happen when copying files to Fat32 partitions. As with many people I have external hard drives and internal hard drives on Fat 32 partitions. I have tried both with the SATA hard drives and USB hard drives and it doesn't alter the speed of the transfer that much, it is just completing the copy that there is a long delay for.

This becomes a BIG problem when copying lots of little files as there are long delays in between each file.

    Please Help!!!

michaelwheatland, if you interrupt the copying process after you see them in the new folder are the copied files the same as those in the source directory. Or they are all corrupted?

If the copy process is interrupted after the new files are in the new directory and the Nautilus preview has been generated the files are perfect. The delay when copying a large number of small files is very frustrating.
