    Best server distriution?

    Hi gang!

I'm looking for a linux distribution that I can use for a web server that I would need to have up for nearly 100% of the time, and preferably not crash at all!

My immediate thought is Debian Stable.

Any other ones? I'm not sure if Hardy is a good option since another LTS is coming next, and I'm afraid an upgrade might break the server.

I personally have NEVER had my server crash and I just run it on the latest Ubuntu version at the time. All my server does is run apache, mysql, and PHP and it never has had a problem. It is currently runnning 9.10 (standard desktop version). I have heard good things about CentOS though, but I have never tried it.

but now i need to upgrade the server to the latest packages and have been testing with ubuntu 9.10 server and so far i love it!!!!!!!!!!! it is a great os so far and the support seems to be good...

i have researched this same topic and have found that 90% do prefer ubuntu

just remember one thing what ever os you choose there will be pros and cons and a learning curve

Depends what you want it to do.

Generally speaking I go for ubuntu server for pretty much anything.

Fedora/RHEL for Certificate based things. Enterprise quality wise. Sure you can get a cheap ssl going with ubuntu but it's not quite fedora calibre in my opinion. I also like how they come with selinux and other similar things built in default.

    suse enterprise for their edirectory.

    microshit for active directory

Next time i bust my setup. I'm going to try mandriva i think. Few people are pushing 2010 mandriva lately.

I'd prefer to stay within the Debian-based, to be honest.

So now I'm wondering... Debian Stable or Ubuntu LTS? Which would be better?

Debian is more stable; but Ubuntu has these awesome & friendly forums.
