Wink Re: how can i upgrade thunderbird 3?

    1 - Extract the .tar.bz2 file

2 - Enter gksudo nautilus in terminal

    3 - Go to the folder /opt

4 - Copy & paste the Thunderbird file that you extracted to /opt

5 - Enter these commands into Terminal
    sudo -i
    Enter your password if asked.

    cd /opt
    chown -R username filename
Obviously the username refers to you, and the filename to the file

6 - Go to System > Preferences > Main Menu

7 - In Main Menu, click on New Item

8 - In the Name field enter Mozilla Thunderbird Mail/News

9 - In the Command field enter /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird

10 - In the Comment field enter Mozilla Thunderbird Mail/News

Sorry but does this mean all my sensitive data will not be stored inside my encrypted /home/myuser folder?

No, you only copy the Thunderbird folder [which is the actual software] to /opt, the Thunderbird profile and your emails will remain at /home/username/.thunderbird

Yup, thanks, i installed TB3 according to your instructions, started it with the --profileManager option then created a new user pointing to my old TB2 folder.

Needless to say migration was flawless, only the Enigmail extension needed an update!

Hey. How can I get an icon for the launcher for thunderbird? I've tried and I can't figure out how to do it.

Alternatively, you can use UbuntuZilla to install it:

Well the icons that i am using can be found in

    <install dir>/chrome/icons/default/

where install dir is where you placed thunderbird 3.0.
