I am tryng to install a ubuntu 9.10 lamp and samba server. I really need to learn this command line stuff. it would surely help. Any one know of a good reference? I just hope Im not biting off more then I can chew. I thought I had it installed but I got an error 17 after reboot. Who knows. Maybe Im not suppose to run both off the same hardware.
I love that drowning feeling. It's a great motivator for learning how to swim. Ubuntu.com provides great documentation for many aspects of using Ubuntu Linux. In your case, I suggest starting with the terminal guide, and the server guide.
I suspect your hardware is fine. My own personal server is an old PIII 667Mhz machine with only 192 megs of ram. It runs Ubuntu Server 9.10 with a LAMP installation, NFS server, SSH server, and Samba. It is responsive enough for my modest needs. (web development)
