    Unhappy Unable to install

    Hello,

I am just starting to get into Linux again (It's been many many years) and I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu to my machine. Here's what I have...

    Compaq Presario SR1000V
    P4 @ 2.6Ghz
    MSI - MS 6577
Evga Nvidia GeForce 6200 PCI 256MB
    1GB Ram
    WDC WD800BB - 80GB
    WDC WD1000BB - 100GB (place of installation)
    Bios: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG

Also BTW I'm currently running WinXP SP3 on the 80GB. (Not that it should matter.

And these are the error messages I'm reciving when I try to load Ubuntu.

It looks like the installer can't see the cdrom for some reason. A simple workaround would be to try installing from a usb stick. I'd also recommend checking the downloaded iso file for errors.

I have tried the winMD5 and the MD5SUM is the same. I am thinking using a USB stick would be the best. However I cannot find a IMG file for the desktop. It seems like the only ones are CD's. And seeing how that the MD5 is correct yet my computer doesn't like it...

Ok. I've correctly loaded it onto a cd image as well as loading it onto a usb drive. I've tried to do both installers and still come up with the same error message as in my first post.

Honestly I'm about to give up.

How did you make the bootable USB?

    Re: Unable to install

I downloaded the i386 from the Ubuntu main page for the computer I am putting it on from the computer I'm putting it on. I ran WinMD5 to double check that the the MD5SUM was the same on the UbuntuHash page. I then had Unetbootin write the ISO to the USB drive. I then booted up my computer with the USB Drive as the primary. I still had the errors.

I am trying to use Ubuntu 9.10 but I am seeing a lot of documents solving problems for 9.04. Should I try to find 9.04 for a more stable system?

    Re: Unable to install

Check out this bug report, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ev/+bug/143958.

works and I can access the file system. After typing "exit" to return to the menu the CD is found and the next stage in the installer runs correctly and files are copied from the CD.
I've encountered this same problem on an Acer Travelmate C104TCi, which also uses an external IEEE1394 DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive which appears as /dev/scd0.

    From busybox I can do:

    mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom
    exit

    and continue with the installation.

    Re: Unable to install

This error just resurfaced while installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Lenovo S12 netbook throug a USB stick. Told initramfs to exit two times and it continued to load.

    Re: Unable to install

From the specs on the computer I would think that the newest version (10.04) would work great. My first question would be, why are you trying to install a older version?
Maybe you can start here and just follow the pages to see if there is something you might have miss during installing.
