Intel Atom 330 enough? For a home server?

    A) Is an Intel Atom 330 with 2 gbs of ram enough to host, a single email address for home use?

    B) One Mac osx time machine backup

    C) Also act as a print server?

83 KB/s too slow as upload for this simplistic server?

OS: Ubuntu 9.10, 64 bit vs 32 bit?

I was thinking about starting with this barebone system as I already have the ram and a harddrive.

    yes, it will be fine.

i have both the single & dual-core foxconns, there great, but the intel vid has freezing issues with compiz, other then that there perfect.

you might want to look at the "AspireRevo Nettop" now they've come down in price, you'll actually spend less if you have to buy all the parts for the bare bones.

you can get mitx boards with a PCIe x16 slot for expansion.
I picked up a Zotac ITXION-f board it's a great little 330 Atom board and I've got an expansion slot for future upgrades...

I'm going to use it as a small Media center once I get the Video playback sorted! lol

It's actually completely over the top for what you want to do (IMHO)

You only really need 64bit for 4gb ram +, but it wouldn't hurt to use either 64/32.

83 KB/s upload to slow ? For what?

    For a single email address.

    Heres a internet speed test:

For emails, speed is not that big of an issue unless you're expecting to send or get #Mb attachments.

If it's just general email then that will be fine. remeber you send emails using that 0.93Mb at the moment so unless you're starting a "spamming server" then things will be fine.

If you are expected to get or send huge attachments then get something like google mail account and use that was a mailbox store and pull your emails from there using your mailserver. That way you can intercept big emails in google so it won't clog up your email.

As the 90 some KB/s would only be a bottleneck when sending emails with large attachments, which I rarely do. The download speed would be fine for downloading the emails.

Which chipset + processor would use less watts?

INTEL Atom n330 with the Intel 945GC 40 watts?

    OR

INTEL Celeron 420 with the Intel G31 Unkown watts

Atom wins on power every time!

The Celeron draws around 35w at idle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors
Whereas the Atom draws around 3.5w at idle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Atom

as for the graphics they will probably won't make much diffrence.
