Gimp bothering me: how to paste an image

I pasted an image into Gimp and wanted to make a selection of it but all it wanted to let me do was move it around. I could erase and do some other stuff but not make selections.

In fact, when I open the program and haven't pasted anything the dotted line is around the whole workspace as if it is selected. However, if I go to the menu deselect is greyed out. When I paste the image the dotted line remains and if I do something like the eraser there is a dotted line around it too.

This is very annoying, why can't I just edit an image?

You have to open a new window (in Advance Option you can choose background type)
copy the selection and paste it in to the new window,
    then Image> Autocrop Image
