Volume control is broken on Dell laptops with 9.10 Karmic Koala

The volume control acts so that when you decrease it under ~20% the volume is muted, while above that value it is set to 100%. I have seen some other people had the same problem (and some bugs were filed at Launch Pad), but no solutions so far. Has anybody managed to solve this problem?

I have the same exact problem.

I also have Windows Vista installed - and when I press the up/down volume buttons they raise/lower the volume by 3% each time - so I'm wondering if this is different in Ubuntu.

Hope somebody finds a solution soon.

    Btw, I have a Dell Inspiron 1720.
