upgrading video and sound card problem

OKay, I want to upgrade the video and sound card on one of my PC's, to put ubuntu on it. i already have it up to 2GB ram. It has two PCI Slots. Are all video and sound cards that use the PCI interface compatible with my motherboard, or are their other factors to include in choosing a video card?

Any motherboard with a PCI slot will work with any PCI device/card.

The only conceivable incompatibility is that a video card may use up more power than your power supply can handle, but that is unlikely unless you added 2 extra drives or something else power consuming.

Thanks that helps alot. The power supply is a 90watt component. So I will have to find a pretty old video/sound card. lol

Yeah, you may want to use a power supply calculator.

Also, look for a graphics card without any cooling fan/heatsink on it. That means it will almost definitely be lower power.

Might I ask what the specs are though on this computer? Why are your current video and sound insufficient? And what's the CPU?

    The current specs are:

    256MB ram
    NO SOUND/VIDEO card
CPU: Intel celeron from like 1998 (copyright date on CPU itself).
    Power Supply: 90 watt
OS: Windows NT, soon to be (hopefully) xubuntu!

    Thanks for your help!

    According to wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors
The celerons from 1998 ranged from 266 mhz to 333 mhz.
The only (graphical) version of Ubuntu that will run on 256MB of ram is Xubuntu, and it won't run well considering the memory and the CPU.

Are you sure you want to try running (X)ubuntu on such a slow machine? I wouldn't recommend putting very much money into the cards.
If you're looking for a good cheap computer, I can recommend this (which I heard runs ubuntu well):

Re: upgrading video and sound card problem

Really I am just doing this as my little project. I really don't want to put in too much money, I just want to see if I can get it working. Might install DSL or puppy if I can. I wonder if the motherboard has integrated video? I know that is a more modern thing. Maybe I could put freedos on it, and just use it for fun.

What can I do without a video card (I can't find one anywhere for this box)?
