I'm wondering if there is a possibility to get the 'Zoom' desktop
effect in kde 4 to 'zoom out' to zoom factors < 1, ie to see more pixels
on the screen than the physical screen size. I tried doing this
using xrandr (see quoted link) but kde can't handle this I think.
In the desktop effects however, it is doing similar things (like
showing scaled versions of all windows) so maybe there is a way
after all.

Reason I want this is to be able to work with gimp without having
my screen filled up with all gimp's toolbox windows..
