problems with 9.10

Hi al I reinstalled 9.04 and upgraded to 9.10. I have crash alerts. Thard drive has several bad sectors. It works with some minor problems. The sound has not volume control on the tool bar. I installed alsa mixer and and was able to turn the sound up some, but not as loud as the laptop.
The laptop is a dell 1545 I bought two months ago.
My Qestion is Has anyone else had this problem? Should I go back to *.04? thanks tom_d
