Desktop version of ubuntu 9.10 32 bit freezing! HELP!

Hi, I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop, installation went fine, but when I've booted it up, after, it will freeze no matter what I do. Example: I will start a terminal, and it will freeze, or if I change wallpapers, it will freeze. This might be a hardware fault, but I was wondering if anyone was having a similar experience?

    Lets hear those replies!

    Tom.

Re: Desktop version of ubuntu 9.10 32 bit freezing! HELP!

It could be a video driver problem. I had something similar happen when I was trying to correct a problem with my graphics on my laptop. I had the incorrect driver for my ATI card, and had to switch it.

Without more info about your set up it is a bit hard to diagnose. What are the specs of your computer? What type of graphic card?

Yeah, I think Ubuntu has done away with an xorg.conf in 9.10 (It's a mistake IMO, I've been able to correct so many problems in the past with an xorg.conf--even when I was a newbie), so you might have to create one (Copy of mine for my ATI laptop below). I had create one with both my computers running Karmic.

Did a quick search of the forum and came up with this thread for the Intel 950 graphics cards. It's for Jaunty, but there may be some useful tips for Karmic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ight=950+intel

(I'm afraid I can't be too much more of a help since I have nVidia and ATI graphic cards...)

This is my xorg.conf I had under 8.10, but it's working under 9.10 (sort of) too. You may be able to at least get an idea of how to create one.

    Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of thexserver-xorg	package.
    #
    # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings here are ignored.
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated again, run the following command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: Desktop version of ubuntu 9.10 32 bit freezing! HELP!

I haven't done this part in a long time, but I think if you run
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
in a terminal it will create one for you.

I've usually saved a copy of mine from version to version just in case something goes wrong with an install. That way I'll always have one.
