    Re: sh:grub > desperation

I am having the same problem with my HP Mini 110. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 with Wubi from Windows XP. On start up, the first Menu showing Windows and Ubuntu Netbook Remix is not working for ubuntu. It is only after selecting Windows XP that appears a second menu for Ubuntu and Windows (curious!!). But when i selected Ubuntu, then comes this screen:

    GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4

[Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible
    device/file completions ]

    Sh: grub > _

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Many thanks!

if you know your kernel you can load the kernel with the command kernel <kernel name>. Then you must boot the kernel with the command boot <kernel name>

    @ Jheaton5
Thanks for response , but this doesn't work .
There's no command in Grub by the name of kernel.
By the way , the Kernel is 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-14-generic

    Re: sh:grub > desperation

Well, you may be right. I just used this procedure to get out the same situation, but now that I recall that was in grub-legacy not grub2.

See this article on the grub2 shell.

    Re: sh:grub > desperation

God knows what the solution is ,I have tried various things and have lost data 3 times. I'm not going to install 9.10 now and will revert back to 9.04 for sure. Its really bad that we could not develop a stable release of Grub2 , while everybody was talking and focusing on grub2 in this flavor of Ubuntu. That shows how amature we are.Hoping Google would come soon with ChromeOS. What a shame

    Re: sh:grub > desperation

    When in the shell try:
    Code:
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic ro
    initrd	/boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
    boot
If this boots open a terminal:
    Code:
    sudo update-grub2
