DoubleSight 7" USB Monitor - DisplayLink Drivers - Extended Desktop

I recently bought a DoubleSight 7" USB Monitor DS-70U, trying to get it working as an extended desktop on Mythbuntu 9.10 and having some difficulty. It uses the DisplayLink technology.

It works in console mode, and also works fine as a standalone monitor with X windows. I can also get it working as the primary (Screen 0) monitor in an extended desktop setup. It just will not give me a screen if I set it up as the secondary monitor (Screen 1) using the config below.

    Code:
    Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Server Layout"
       Screen 0 "Default Screen" 0 0
Screen 1 "DisplayLinkScreen" LeftOf "Default Screen"
    EndSection

Here is the section of the Xorg.0.log file where the DisplayLink drivers get loaded...and then get unloaded! I don't see any errors that explain why they were unloaded.

(II) do I need RAC? No, I don't.

By merely switching the two screens in the ServerLayout section, both monitors work in extended desktop mode. However, the tiny 7" screen does not really work well as a primary monitor!

    Code:
    Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Server Layout"
       Screen 0 "DisplayLinkScreen" 0 0
Screen 1 "Default Screen" LeftOf "DisplayLinkScreen"
    EndSection
I installed the DisplayLink drivers using the instructions here and here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: DoubleSight 7" USB Monitor - DisplayLink Drivers - Extended Desktop

    Hi Cal.,

    Had you tried to add
    --
    Option "Xinerama" "on"
    --
    into your ServerLayout part?

I found on some posts that mentioned Xinerama should be on to enable X11 recognized different graphic card at the same time.
Also there are people said the depth should be the same for all monitor which should be always 16 for displaylink driver.
Sorry I can't attach those posts' url right now.
I didn't save them into my bookmark.

I'm trying to get my displaylink devices work as an extended monitor but with no luck so far. (Under ubuntu 9.10 64bit)
When I set it as an standalone monitor, the X win will show without the login screen. Orz
Can you share that conf with me?

    Thanks in advance.

FYI. I posted my questions on Libdlo mailing list which might come out a working solution later.

    Hi Cal

Did you ever solve this problem? I'm having a similar problem myself.

Re: DoubleSight 7" USB Monitor - DisplayLink Drivers - Extended Desktop

I ended up starting a seperate X server for the USB monitor, and then using x2x (http://x2x.dottedmag.net/) to allow moving the mouse between the screens.

This scenario actually works quite well for me. x2x doesn't allow you to drag apps between both screens (just the pointer), which I don't really want anyway because mythtv runs full screen on the main monitor. It does allow me to easily get to the USB monitor for checking download statuses, and what not.

This is the quick script I made to start up the DoubleSight monitor.

    xinit -- /usr/bin/X :1 -xf86config xorg.conf.DS -novtswitch -sharevts -dpi 25 -audit 0 vt12 &
    sleep 5
    x2x -west -from :0 -to :1 &
    export DISPLAY=":1"
    exec startxfce4 &
    And the xorg.conf.DS

Re: DoubleSight 7" USB Monitor - DisplayLink Drivers - Extended Desktop

Can you please maybe post information on where you learned more about xorg?

I have an external dvi to usb driver, and have it set up correctly, but it only runs the test on the external device (draws shapes) and I have no clue on how to add it as a second display device.

    Thank you!

This is the quick script I made to start up the DoubleSight monitor.
Instead of going through the trouble of definining void inputs, it seems that all I really needed in ServerFlags was:

    Code:
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
Now none of the primary display's input devices are disturbing us.

About to take a look at differing keyboard layout on the x2x DS screen now.

Thank you very much for posting this - it's a neat way around a problem I was having getting my Lilliput screen to work.

One question - at the moment I can only use a modified version of your script as root; any tips on running it as a local user instead?

Re: DoubleSight 7" USB Monitor - DisplayLink Drivers - Extended Desktop

I recently bought a Doublesight DS90U display and tried to have it work under ubuntu 10.10. As I am totally a linux outsider, I installed displaylink from ubuntu software center, but the laptop just can not detect my Doublesight DS90U. Can you please tell me how to have the USB display work under ubuntu 10.10?

Hey, richardlxn, did you find a solution/driver for this monitor on Ubuntu? I just got one and don't know how to make it work on Ubuntu 10.

    Thx in advance
