    (10.04) No sound on headphones

    Greetings.

I have installed the Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep laptop and I can't get sound on my headphones when I plug them. Besides the laptop speakers don't shutdown either - like it happened with the same OS on my Toshiba Tecra M4.

"aplay -l" lists my card properly and nothing is muted on "alsamixer". It states that my card is a HDA Intel with chipset Nvidia MCP78 HDMI.

Any thoughs on how can I crack this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers.

    Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
    Open this file for editing:
    Code:
     gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Insert this line at the bottom:
    Code:
     options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 enable_msi=1
Save. Close. Reboot. Check your levels in alsamixer.
    Code:
     alsamixer
Press <F6> to select the correct soundcard.
Press <F3> to show playback levels. <F4> selects capture levels [or use <Tab>]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change levels. <M> to mute/unmute.
Go to "System ->Preferences ->Sound" and make sure the correct soundcard is default and adjust your profile on the hardware tab.
On the output tab choose the correct device.

I am also having a sound problem and am using headphones. Could this solution possibly work for me as well? What would I add to the file if I am using a MSI P6N Diamond with onboard Creative ® Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio?

Don't know. You can always try it out and then if doesn't work revert the steps, but I think it won't probably work because your card is a Creative and my soundcard seems an Intel one with a Nvidia chipset. Totally different hardware, I guess.

    Hello,

I got the same problem I think.
But my laptop is TOSHIBA A660. So seems hp-dv5 is not right. Do you know what the model is? where to check it?

    aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC269 Analog [ALC269 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

    Many thanks.

First try auto or basic. It would look like:
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto
    OR
    options snd-hda-intel model=basic
