Do you mean the boot screen or the X Splash screen?
If you mean the boot screen then yes you can change it.

    Install StartUp Manager:
    sudo apt-get install startupmanager
Download your bootsplash theme, go to System > Administration > StartUp Manager & click the Appearance tab. Click Manage usplash themes, click Add & locate the theme you have downloaded & select it.

You will now have your nice new bootsplash theme in place.

Do you know of a tutorial on how to create your own? Is it just an image? If so, what type?

Re: Changing the splash screen 9.10

I;m trying to change the splash screen on karmic koala.
I installed startup manager but do not have an appearance tab.
Installed ubuntu tweak but I can't seem to see anything to change splash screen from there.
I installed configuration editor but changes don't seen to kick in.
Every instruction i have come across seems to be inaccurate so far.
Does anyone have another idea to change the splash screen

Same problem as PuckaFish here. I've only got two tabs in the StartUp-Manager window, "Boot options" and "Advanced".
