I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 x64 Server on a computer with Intel 2,83GHz Quad processor, 8GB of memory and two 1TB SATA2 disks. For some reason disk operations are very CPU intensive, meaning that CPU load can reach into 10-20 territory easily and even SSH console slows down significantly. Disk operations are very fast at speeds of about 100MB/s, but copying VMWare images of several hundred gigabytes still takes quite a while and while doing that, everything is very sluggish. Any idea what might cause this? I'm not running LVM nor RAID (software or hardware). I'd rather have slower disk operations on a server that is still usable while copying files.
