RadeOn X1300 / No GL acceleration

I've tried both radeon and radeonhd drivers. Neither has GLX, and radeonhd (advertised for X1300 series) is even unable to keep proper screen resolution. What is the problem and how can it be fixed?
If you've nothing to say, 'yes' will do just fine.

Well, it does not. What driver package I shall use, and how to enable acceleration?

These older cards are no longer supported in 3D - fglrx doesn't play with the new X server 1.6 and ATI Catalyst has dropped support for the cards:

This is so unacceptable that I can't believe it's true. No 3D support for a giant portion of their chipsets that are still in use in millions of laptops?

Ubuntu devs and ATI shouldn't be surprised if they see a swell in customer complaints as a result.

Frankly, it's idiotic that this isn't working and fully supported.

Stuart please refrain from spreading unnecessary FUD. If you had bothered to read the OP, we're not discussing fglrx here, but radeon/radeonhd open source drivers.

The fact is that AMD haven't 'dropped' support for these cards, they have just moved the support to the open source driver for all cards R500 and older (cards X1xxx and older). They actually employ people to work on this open source driver.

The open source driver has 3D support for these cards, so in fact support has improved because these older cards now have 3D support out-of-the-box. No need to install extra fglrx drivers.

Re: RadeOn X1300 / No GL acceleration

I don't need 3D acceleration, but I was unable to make my dual head config to work, all I get is cloned view. (Kubuntu 9.04 + ATI Radeon X1300 + 2x LCD) (otherwise the default driver works excellent [I didn't try any desktop effects as I hate them])

Do you have any idea if this is already supported in OSS drivers (and just the system settings is lacking option), or when it will be supported?

This is critical issue for me, I can't use 9.04 due to this "regression" (from user point of view it's regression, because before 9.04 there was fglrx, which did work with dual head like charm). I was unable to google any recent straightforward information for this issue, and you seem to be well informed. Thank you for any information.
