    Choosing a processor

I am trying to choose between the following processors:

    AMD Athlon™ II X2 250 (3.0GHz, 2MB)
    AMD Athlon™ II X2 240 (2.8GHz, 2MB)
    AMD Athlon™ II X2 215 (2.7GHz, 1MB)

There is a 20 dollar difference going from the 215 to the 240 and from the 240 to the 250. Is there going to be any difference between the 240 & 250? Thanks.

    A $20 difference? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...hlon-X2-(AM3)&

Other than clock speed? No. OC'ing the 240 to 3.0GHz should be easy and would negate the difference.

Another chip to keep in mind is the athlon II x3 435 if you do tasks that would benefit from a third core.

The only way you will see a difference between a 240 and a 250 is with benchamrking (or maybe a stopwatch).

@ MelDJ- Core 2 Duos have 64bit instruction sets. Ohh, and the C2D 8600s are over 3 times the cost of a X2 250.

Always buy the second-fastest in a given range. Speed difference between 1st and 2nd is usually least and price difference is usually greatest.
AMD Phenom Quad 9650, 8Gb RAM, (2 x 1) +(1 x 1.5)Tb HDDs; 64-bit Lucid (ʍoʃs ʎpooʃq ooʇ sɐʍ ʇı ʇnq ʎʇʇɐᴎ pǝıɹʇ I); Dual-boot Win XP Pro 32-bit (although mainly use WINE or VirtualBox). HP t5730 with 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD running xubuntu 10.10.

I was building a system on Dell.com and they showed a 20 dollar difference. Thanks for the input.
