    Rugged laptops?

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with rugged laptops. I'm graduating in May and hopefully I'll be doing disaster relief work overseas. My laptop is a refurbished HP530 so I don't have high hopes for it lasting very long in the environments I'll be working and so I'm looking for something else. It doesn't really have to be that fancy, the most intensive program I'll run is google Earth but it would be nice to have a heads up of what to expect. Right now Panasonic's toughbook series seems to be the main contenders, any others?

    Re: Rugged laptops?

Panasonic is definitely the most popular type of rugged laptop. I have had customers tell me they're extremely durrable. I've heard about them falling off of 2nd story decks being built, being dropped into puddles, having things spilled on them, and even surviving bug infestation. Personally, I have never owned one. These experiences were related to me by other people.

Edit: I think the fire stations around me all use toughbooks as well.

    Hi
you find no reason for their bulkiness?
    Padding.

the only reason these machines can stand water, heat, shock, sand and more is because of all the padding and sealants built into the box. Try doing some of this stuff in the link provided to a normal "thin" notebook.

    Re: Rugged laptops?

My IBM T43 was a rugged laptop. Although it was not a toughbook or something along those lines, it was hard to break. It actually took me stepping on it (do not ask) to break the screen, but other than that it worked just fine. I had mine fall down a flight of steps before (do not ask), still worked! Not even a crack in the screen!
