    laptop not charging

As a newbie to Ubuntu and after getting everything I needed working okay in 9.04 I upgraded to 9.10. First off both my wireless and eth internet connection stopped working - I guess it's something to do with wicd and then the battery would not charge or to be more precise it charges for a couple of minutes then shuts down. I have the laptop working now by removing the battery and reverting back to 9.04 it seemed the easiest way - internet is okay again.
How do I solve my battery charging problem please. After googling is it something to do with gnome power management but I do not understand how to fix it.
    Thanks

    Re: laptop not charging

It charged okay for weeks in 9.04 and at first in 9.10 but now it does not charge in either. The only way to run the laptop at the moment is to take out the battery and just use the mains. If I leave the battery in it charges just for a few minutes then the laptop shuts down...this is with the mains connected as well.
