    Best Hardware recommendation

I'm running 9.04 on my MacBook Pro which has some issues with the hardware, nothing major but some issues

While hardware support of Ubuntu is wide and varied, is there a particular class of machines that are "more" compatible then others?

I'm thinking of getting a second machine (probably another laptop preferably a netbook) and the first order of business is Ubuntu compatibility.

    This should be good.

I say: find out what netbook you most like (screen readability, keyboard layout, features, etc) then look for problems with that netbook and Ubuntu.

Let's say you like the MSI Wind U100. That seems to be very popular amongst the U-crowd.

Let's check w/ Google by searching (msi wind u100 ubuntu sucks).

It seems that there's some Ubuntu bashing there, and some questions about graphics acceleration, but it's relatively quiet as far as the netbook itself goes.

So, the MSI Wind U100 isn't a teetotal loser...

Now, there's only about 5000 more netbooks to look at.

Enviable specs! Did you have trouble with sound?

It seems like a LOT of people ask in this forum about Acer Aspire Sound problems.

Sure, it's usually a simple fix, but a lot of people ask.

Acers seem popular. They're not too expensive, and use 'generic' parts.
I have a 'gateway' laptop - 1gb ram, wifi, dvdrw etc .... ubuntu had only one problem - it couldn't see the wifi.

After muucho messing around, i did yet another install (i'd be upto about 5, by then) - WITHOUT the LAN cable plugged in .....

Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather ..... That jaunty jackalope saw my wifi connection and logged me str8 on !!!!!!!!

That is my stock advice to anyone doing an install now !!!!

    Phill.

I don't seem to have sound trouble on mine with karmic. I do think I had some sound issues at one point, but was a quite a while ago.

    Re: Best Hardware recommendation

Perhaps I'm asking the wrong question, given ubuntu's varied population.

I'm coming from a Macintosh perspective where there is one hardware vendor (apple) and one operating system vendor (apple) and one main software vendor (apple). You see the theme here, apple controls the hardware/OS and produces a lot of software as well.

I'm happy with my MBP so I suppose its as good as anything else running ubuntu. I was hoping there were other platforms that ran ubuntu better.

Dell sells computers with ubuntu pre-installed.
They might be a release behind or so depending.

My Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 2528 Notebook works perfectly except the build-in modem, but i never use it anyway.
