    Hello,

    Re: vlc bug

I'm running 9.10 so this may be different; but under Tools > Preferences, click the Interface button in the left pane, and check "Allow only one instance".

If I already have an open VLC player I tend to drag a file to it if I want to play it.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

If you're running the default VLC that comes from the repositories, you might considering installing the latest VLC.
