Copying files network share cause internet timeouts

Hello!

I am experiencing a strange problem!

I am a UPC Chello customer.

From UPC Chello I received an Arris CM450 Cable Modem.

I also use a Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GL Router (with dd-wrt software).

Firmware version: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/22/09) std - build 12548M NEWD Eko

I have 2 issues. 1 concerning VPN (witopia) and 1 concerning file sharing (without using vpn).

1.
When I use my personal VPN (witopia.net) connection, I lose internet connectivity on the modem and I am left with 3 green blinking lights (Power, Online and Cable). The router remains online and seems to be functioning normally.

This happens on both a wired and wirless connection.

2.
Furthermore, I have a 1TB LaCie NetworkSpace Hard disk drive connected via Ethernet to my router. When I try to copy files (700mb) onto my laptop (via wifi) my modem loses internet connectivity. However, when I copy the same file onto my laptop using a wired connection my modem remains online.

I contacted UPC Chello and their technicians were not able to locate the problem.

I have exchanged both modem and router twice already.

(Running Windows vista Home Premium 32-bit and Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit.)
