Back when Mandrake was new, the same thing happened with Gentoo.
The reason why is because back then, Mandrake was the proverbial newb distro, in a similar sense (though not as severely, admittedly) to how Ubuntu is now.
So I think there is a tendency to want to go from one extreme to the other.
You won't hear me complain about it, though. Personally I think it can only do Ubuntu users good to get out of the wading pool as quickly as possible.
I see Arch as a 72 Chevy and Ubuntu as a new Maserati. With Arch you got a rough and tumbler that you can open the hood and literally get your whole body in there and play with. With the Maserati you just play with it. If most Maserati owners were to open the hood they'd say wt... When the owner gets bored with it, he justs gets a new one every six months .
I got Ubuntu and Arch installed on my computer and I haven't tried Ubuntu in awhile but I got to say that Karmic looks very nice.
