Drpaul,
Make sure your camera works in ubuntu 9.10. Try cheese or a program like that. I've read that your camera may have issues? What camera is it exactly?
For exmaple, see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3847488#post3847488
Good luck.

Have you tried deleting the latest skype, 2.1.0.xx and re-installing 2.0.0.xx?
Cheers
Steve
New Trust spotlight pro arrived this morning. works straight out of the box on both Linux and Windows, (spit, spit, but I had to test it!) excellent picture quality.
Thanks to all of you who tried to help me with my problem. i guess it just a cheap naff camera and wouldn't work even if John Logie Baird had set up the video.
Steve
thanks for all of the suggestions. as my earlier post mentioned cheese is working.
I tried to go back to 2.0.0; video worked but sound did not. I tried 2.1.0.47 and everything seems to be working.
Hope that this helps others.
Paul
Whilst reading through the items I wondered why nobody takes the easy route, simply by adjusting the main menu call.
In System/Preferences/Mainmenu select Skype whithin the Internet part of "Applications". Then in "Properties" change the execution line by typing excactly the phrase :
bash -c 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype'
for a 32 bit version of Ubuntu
or
bash -c 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype'
when you have installed a amd64-version of ubuntu.
Thanks, you are a God send. The complete solution is posted here.

This works for me too, at least the Test. I have not tried a chat.
Video is not working in Google Chat too. It is a plugin. Can this script be applied? How?
The only solution that worked for me was to downgrade to 2.1.0.47. I was able to find the .deb here: http://download.skype.com/linux/skyp....47-1_i386.deb
I tried all of the other solutions involving lib4l1compat.so etc., but nothing worked. I have an hp pavilion dv2000 laptop with an inbuilt webcam. lsusb tells me it is the following:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0c45:62c0 Microdia Sonix USB 2.0 Camera
I had to spend the better part of a day figuring this out, so I hope it helps someone.
Just see this thread. I am having problem with Skype video in Maverick. Sounds works, built in webcam works in Cheese out of the box but skype's video test just shows a blank box. I have created a thread in the absolute beginner section. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1643387
If anyone stumbling on this thread knows of a way to help, it would be much appreciated.
