    Jekshadow,

You have the right Distro......Ubuntu 9.10

But, with that Distro and kernel, you do not have to install any firmware or drivers other than the one xterm command. You might be causing a software conflict.

What if you started fresh and re-installed Ubuntu 9.10 and did that one xterm command? Then check to see if you are up and running with the b43?

I'm pretty sure I wiped EVERYTHING... I deleted /lib/firmware/b43 and /lib/firmware/bcmxx (I think it was called that), and also /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/updates to get rid of all of the custom kernel modules (I had gotten rid of the nVidia driver and wl before hand, so only the drivers from the package were there). I also uninstalled the packages

"pretty sure" hmmmmm. Something is still causing a conflict for you. My guess is that it is some software remnant.

Do you have a lot of added software on your Ubuntu o/s and don't want to lose it?

If so, run remastersys and make an iso back-up of your present system.

Then, take a clean Ubuntu 9.10 and install it and add only the one xterm command.

Or, take an Acronis image of your present hdd that you can re-apply if you want. Then install a clean Ubuntu 9.10

Both of those are good approaches to learn and use anyway.

Otherwise, I throw in the towel and am out of suggestions.

    Good luck,

    A

I'll just copy my home dir to an external drive and reinstall.

Super clean re-install of Ubuntu 9.10.

    And, you are home free.

Enjoy your new b43 wireless but don't forget to post your success in this thread.

Been awol from this thread for a couple of days. Just tried the instructions for installing b43 and blacklisting ssb. The b43 driver is "activated and in use" but still in WICD no wireless (should see about three possible connections).

    lshw -C network

    shows

    *-network
    description: network controller
    product: BCM4312 802.11/b/g
    vendor: Broadcom Corporation
    physical id: 0
    bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
    version: 01
    width: 64 bits
    clock: 33mhz
    capabilities: bus_master cap_list
    configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0
    resources: irq:17 memory:f0200000-f0203fff

next comes the ethernet interface, which is working

    then

    *-network
    description: Wireless interface
    physical id: 1
    logical name: wlan0
    serial: 00:21:63:9f:67:51
    capabilities: ethernet physical wireless
    configuration: broadcast=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg

Mnoyes, try blacklisting wl also, just to make sure it's not hogging the card. And try adding "alias wlan0 b43" in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases.conf and restarting.

Hmmm, worked for a minute! ... then WICD froze and when I rebooted, no wireless networks.

I removed and reinstalled WICD but it is still freezing up... forcing me to do a hard reboot several times....

Thanks for your help, by the way!

Your welcome! You might want to try using Network Manager again because it's working really well with b43 and I don't find any issues with it. I haven't tried Wicd yet, but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
