File Types how to associate with applications?

    Hello,

In MS Windows, It is easy to associate certain applications to open or run some file types. This may be done from the System itself, or from the options or settings of the application regarded.

I installed VLC player and I just want it able to automatically open some file types such as *.mp3, *.m3u, etc.
    Best Regards,

    simple in Ubutnnu as well

    System>preferences> preffered software
if the app isn't listed you can find most in this location and add it

    /usr/bin/

Thank you very much for your quick and useful replies. However, I think the suggestion of credobyte is more simple and specific for my needs, because your suggestion offers more general customization. It deals, only, with 4 general types, namely, Internet, Multimedia, System and Accessibility.

As a little, but unnecessary, question, Is there another way to change the icon of that file type?
