    ACPI: EC: Input buffer not empty, aborting...

    Hello there,

    I hope you can help me.
    I purchased an MSI CR700 today.
    As I always do with all my previous laptops, I went and threw off Windows and install Ubuntu.
    Having now gotten Ubuntu 9.04, and having to had to update my kernel due to Atheros problems, all seemed well...

    Yet whenever I start the laptop I get line upon line upon line of "]
    Code:
    "ACPI: EC: Input buffer not empty, aborting transaction"
    Or something along those lines.

    Now I have the following problems; When I run the laptop off the battery it detects it as being on AC, the brightness won't change when plugging out/in the AC adapter and what for me is most annoying is that when I'm surfing the web, and scroll down, the page starts to mess up.

    Now please note, I'm no newbie, BUT...after having read some pages and not having a clue what theyre talking about, I ask that you please explain thoroughly what I need to do.

    Well I have the Dell Studio 1555 and do get the same error sometimes but it never messes up my computing experience like it does in ur case. Moreover I am able to fiddle with Brightness and all. Ur problem has struck me as a warning now so will look into it and report back here if get to somewhere.

    Don't get me wrong, I am able to change the brightness settings manually but usually it darkens up when you unplug the adaptor. Here it doesn't

    On a fresh boot I'm able to change brightness via brightnesskeys and ac-adapter
    is detected properly, but as soon as the following error appears:

    brightness control is no longer possible. Even the detection whether an
    ac-adapter or not is attached fails.
    
    I found that commenting the "goto end;" in ec.c (see below) workarounds this
    problem. It may be something similar like the MSI Force-Polling. Maybe you
    could find some better fix for that issue (I'm not that kernel-specialist at

    I just got a Dell 1555 Studio.. I'm having the same problems:
    I downloaded Backtrack 4, after booting up the same error (ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction).. I also cannot login with root and toor, it says incorrect.

    As you already know, I'm unable to help with the ACPI error, but I do have some new info on it for you and those who have the same problem:

    The ACPI error is referring (for me at least) to a battery condition, where my battery is not detected in the kernel. So if you also notice that when you remove your adaptor cable and run on the battery yet the laptop still says your running on mains, then that's the reason.
    The only fix to that would be messing with the kernel, which I'm not going to do because I prefer stable-ish kernels than custom ones. So make sure you keep updating.

    As for the root problem and 'toor'(?):
    Ubuntu comes as standard without root enabled. At Ubuntu you use the command

    to enable root access. It is possible to enable root but my argument to that would be, why do that if you can use sudo, which also stops you from making any bad mistakes.

    I'm having the same issue on an Acer Aspire 6530, when I turn off the monitor using the Fn-F6 keys and then turn it back on, the keyboard and touchpad is disabled. Only a reboot seems to bring them back to life.

    I cannot confirm due to the fact that I do not encounter FN problems on my laptop, however, there have been mention of a few ideas in regards to them problems which might be worth trying out.

    Some people claim that the ACPI error is able to be disabled by logging into Windows (that's if you dual boot), and then restarting into Ubuntu. However, I have tried and tested this and at least on my laptop this is not the case, but who knows, it's worth a try.
    The same can be said for the Fn key problems.

    It's worth checking in the Ubuntu repositories to see if you have a package that may be added to your type of laptop which will cease the problems, and there is always the option to put your monitor to sleep inside Ubuntu without the need to use the Fn keys.
