Some like it for this reason, and some (like me) dislike it for this reason. If you thinks it's just a benign symbol for "State's Rights", you are deluded.

That's all I'll say about this, because I love the idea of this thread, and don't want it derailed .
I am from Virgina and I was stationed in NC for 3 years. I have seen both descriptions you gave also, but I don't like it when people label someone that has that flag or sticker on their vehicle as being a racist. I agree, the thread was going great with out the arguments.

In my opinion, a good national flag is both distinct and simple.

Examples of indistinct flags: Irish flag vs Italian flag. Green, white, & orange vs green, white & red. Basically an Irish flag can look like a faded Italian flag, and an Italian flag can look like an over-dyed Irish flag. I mean no offense to either nation, just that their flags are too similar.

As for my favorite... Well, I have to admit bias towards the United States flag. Not simple, but familiar. Other than that, the flag of Japan is very simple, and highly symbolic.

The Indian flag also has green and orange ..

I was always confused between the flags of America, Britain and Australia .. What's with the blue, red and the stars/stripes?

India is a pluralist society that creates magic with democracy, rule of law and individual freedom, community relations and diversity. I wouldn't mind being born ten times to rediscover India. - Robert Blackwill, U.S Ambassador until 2003.

Even though I'm Canadian and I may be biased, I honestly like the look of our flag:

    America, **** yeah!

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Seriously speaking, my favorite flag is Croatia's.

The moon will illuminate my room and soon I'm consumed by my doom.
