Sorry but I'm afraid Linux is the worst OS when it comes to sound. There may be a small chance of doing something like this, but a big chance that you'll break your system trying. I'm afraid if sound is that important, you should go back to Windows.

If you're going to give advice like that, I recommend not giving advice at all. The mission here is not to convince users that Ubuntu is hopeless - it's to help them get Ubuntu working how they want.

I recommend Banshee. I find its equalizer to work nicely with very little adjustments.
