Moving to NYC

I may be moving to NYC in the future and I'm looking for advice on finding a place to live that isn't hours away from where I need to work. It's only a few blocks from Grand Central Terminal and I know I definitely can't afford to live anywhere near it. Any advice about how to go about living or a general area to look would help. I'm aware of craigslist if you're going to tell me that but it's a big city and I could use all the help I could get. So I'm looking for something in an affordable area without a huge commute to Grand Central Terminal, any advice on decent gyms would be nice as well.

You might be able to find an extended stay hotel in the area which could be in your budget range. An extended stay hotel is similar to renting a furnished apartment on a month to month or longer basis. They generally have Wifi, House keeping, cable tv, phone service, and everything else you might possible need or want, and they're generally pet friendly if you have a pet too.

I don't have any affiliation with them, but my wife and I stayed in one of the Homestead hotels a few times when we were looking for a new place to live. Perhaps you might be able to find a similar situation in the area where you will be moving to.

If you are looking for housing accomodation then Staten Island fits your bill, its far cheaper than the options in NYC and even good areas of Brooklyn. Queens is another option, areas like Forest Hills, Kew Gardens is what you should be looking into.

If you want to consider living in Manhattan try the upper east side. My wife and I just move to NYC about a month ago and we found a studio for $1450 in the upper 80s. We were very unsuccessful at working with brokers from Manhattan Apts and Citihabits, 1 day 15-20 places. We looked on Craigslist and found David Siller. He showed us several good apartments and we ended up with a large studio for $1450. Can't help with Gyms.

New York apartments SUCK! I just moved out here from Cali, I have a friend out here paying 1400 for a 3 bedroom in Washington Heights. I dunno how she got that deal, maybe rent control? Either way that's the cheapest place i know of.
