will Beryl work on Hardy instead of Compiz

I've been running Compiz-fusion since installing Hardy last year, but I've been unable to have some effects work correctly.

I have desktop cube (and rotate) enabled, and yep it works sort of - I can zoom and rotate; but as it doesn't display a 3D cube, it won't tilt. I'm using 2 x 19" (4:3) monitors, but don't think that is the problem as I've seen multiple monitors performing these effects with Ubuntu on Youtube videos.

A friend tried Jackalope, but had resolution/driver issues with his monitor (Samsung WS TV), and ended up going with Sabayon 4.2; he has Beryl running on that with 3D cube zoom, rotate and tilt - awesome.

Is there some special setting in Compiz to make the 3D cube work properly; or can Beryl be installed on Hardy.

Also, is there a way to have different desktop wallpaper on each side of the cube?

DOH ... think I just figured out the Compiz setting; if I click n hold the mouse wheel, then move the mouse I have zoom, rotate and tilt

Just a quick note Beryl is dead and has been for a while. It merged with compiz to make compiz fusion which Sabayon uses, not Beryl.

Re: will Beryl work on Hardy instead of Compiz

    thanks,
I know Beryl is 'dead' as such and the it merged into Compiz; that's what I told my friend, but he said he's definitely not using Compiz as his window manager, but using Beryl as it is in his KDE on his Sabayon 4.2 ??

Anyhow; his cube zoom, rotate and tilt now work; it didn't when he was running Compiz ... so I'm not going to debate it with him ... he also just spent 10 hours letting Sabayon 'compile' itself on his PC ... too complex for me - I'll stick with Ubuntu which works pretty damn well 'out of the box'.

Anyhow, I now also have desktop cube zoom, rotate and tilt working in Compiz; it was just some settings, with click & hold of mouse 'scroll wheel' whilst moving mouse to get it to rotate n tilt ... what a cool effect!

But I'd still like to know if there's a way of having different wallpaper on each desktop, that would be 'icing on the cake'.

I don't know of any way to do that, but maybe you could develop a way for that to work!

Your friend is still wrong to a degree, he does not use Beryl but he was right about the fact that he doesn't use Compiz. That's because by default KDE uses Kwin, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KWin.

In regards to having different wallpapers on each virtual desktop check out these links

http://mesanna.com/2009/05/10/a-diff...linux-desktop/ , should work but you lose icons

It isn't too hard to do but you might want to google around a bit more since all of the guides say you either need a patched version of nautilus or you lose your desktop icons. Supposedly this was supposed to be fixed in gnome 2.24, so experiment around and see what you come up with

Re: will Beryl work on Hardy instead of Compiz

Cool and thanks again, I'll look into later today; I'm just getting ready for my regular Sunday ride with the Ulysses Club.

I'll explain to my friend later about Beryl, Compiz and Kwin; I thought it would be something like that. I'm also going to video my desktop later, then post to Youtube &/or Google video accounts so I can embed them in my personal website - then friends can see why I love Ubuntu, and why they should drop '*******'.
