Arrow VLC - No Dialogue, but Yes Sound Effects?? WTF?

    Hey Guys!

Maybe someone can help me out here:

I am trying to play an .avi file in VLC. When played, I do get sound, but no dialogue. I hear all the music and sound effects, but no dialogue.

I believe this is due to how this file was encoded since many DVDs will enable you to change spoken languages. I have messed around with all the audio settings to no avail. There is only one audio track. I have even tried boosting up my volume, but all that did was hurt my ears a little. This same .avi file works as it should in the default Movie Player that comes with Ubuntu. This is very perplexing...

Also, I have tried the following command, but it did not fix the problem:
    sudo apt-get install vlc-plugin-*
I am running VLC 1.0.0 on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty).

Thanks in advanced! This has been bothering me as I must know the solution to cure my curiosity.

EDIT: Also, my VLC install appears to be fine. I have never had any problems with other .avi files before.
