    Hard drive troubles

So I dropped my external hard drive from a height of about 2 - 3 feet off the top of my case and it landed on a wood floor, but it wasn't running. I realize that I should probably just give up on it and get a new one and that I'm stupid for not backing up my data and all that but I still want to at least give it a try before I just use it as a paper weight.

So after dropping it, I picked it up and plugged it into my Windows desktop which recognized some sort of USB drive device but didn't recognize it as a hard drive. I tried plugging it into my Thinkpad loaded with Ubuntu and it didn't even recognize a USB device. The strange thing is the drive didn't even start spinning either time. I'm definitely no hardware expert but I expected the drive to at least attempt to start spinning and making awful clicking sounds at which point I could at least do the freezer trick.

    Any suggestions?

The freezer trick is to literally stick your hard drive into a freezer for a while and then plug it back in. The reason it works is because usually a hard drive fail means something inside is out of place and touching something it shouldn't be touching which causes the ticking. Putting it in the freezer drops the temperature so that the parts contract and hopefully those things won't be touching anymore.
I don't know if that's the actual reasoning but I do know that it can work as a temporary fix so that you can get all the stuff you need off that hard drive before things expand again. That's as much as I know. Again, I'm no hardware specialist.

Thanks, I thought it might be something like that.

Take out the drive and put it into another enclosure.
I lost a "z". Anyone seen it around here?
