    Screen "scrambles" after logout...

I'm currently running Hardy Heron x86 on my NC8000 laptop (Radeon Mobility 9600).

When I logout my screen "scrambles"... I can ctrl-alt-F2 into a prompt but don't know what to do from there. I think there might be some kind of problem with the open source drivers I'm currently using but don't want to try using the proprietary ATI drivers as I've heard that they have issues.

    What should I do?
    Lenovo Thinkpad W500 / Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 / 6GB PC3-8500
    Intel GMA 4500WHD / ATI FireGL V5700 512MB
    80GB Intel SSD

Well, first off, I would install a newer version of ubuntu. Anyway, I had a similar problem which was fixed by the ati drivers. You may as well try them. If they don't work you can always revert back to the open source ones.
