installed new graphics card, Jaunty hangs

Running Jaunty 32 bit on a Pentium 4. Motherboard has Intel 82565G built in graphics controller. Jaunty was installed from the live CD and was working well for several days.

Then I installed a graphics card, a PNY product with an Nvidia 8400GS chip, 512 Mb ram.

I went into the BIOS settings at boot and changed from the built in graphics to the new graphics card, saved the new settings, and re-booted.

The familiar Ubuntu booting screen showed up, and then after about 5 seconds, everything came to a halt.

I tried to boot to the live CD. That proceeded a little farther into the booting procedure but then it too stopped. If I hit ctl-alt-delete, the Ubuntu logo would jump to the left a couple of inches. Same thing if I hit the "enter" key. It never finished the boot.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
