PLEASE HELP: Ubuntu host, VMware not getting any sound

Ubuntu 9.04, VMware workstation 6.5.2

cannot get sound to work, i'm getting the "Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp1: Invalid argument Failed to connect virtual device sound."

i have the same set up on my laptop and it works just fine, but not on my desktop?

desktop has Intel sound, laptop has NVidia, if that matters....

PLEASE HELP!

and to kill two birds with one stone, i installed Amarok and it doesnt get any sound either, any ideas?
