    Ubuntu Does Not Boot But Machine Goes Into A Test Mode

    I am unable to boot into Unbuntu. I have a dual boot system with Vista. When my machine restarts and I am presented with the option to boot into Vista or Ubuntu I choose Ubuntu but instead of the OS booting it will always go into some type of test mode, only when I choose Ubuntu. If I choose Vista it will properly boot into that OS, but I do not want to use Vista. Thanks for any help!

    Could the test mode possibly be your monitor simply lacking signal? Do you hear any sound from the system when you attempt to boot Ubuntu? When it is in this test mode, is there any activity on the hard drive (looking at the light on the case)?

    There is signal to the monitor, I know it is in a test mode because it states what number test it is in at a given time. In the upper left hand corner of the blue screen it has my processor type and various other info about my machine. There is a series of 4 test I believe and when it is done it states that no problems have been found and prompts me to restart the machine, I restart the machine, choose Ubuntu and it will always go into the offending test mode. I have been all over the net and in numerous forums and I have not been able to find any assistance. This has been going on for about the last seven hours and I am beginning to think that I will just have to reformat my machine and start over from scratch, which I really do not want to do because after about a month of tweaking things I had got Ubuntu looking and acting just like I wanted. I am so frustrated and almost to my whits end!

    Sounds like it is starting up with Memtest, can you post the output of

    sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst that is the letter l not the number 1, also post the output of

    sudo fdisk -l again the letter l

    this will tell us what is on your grub menu and how you drives are configured.
    Six Saturdays a week for me.

    I can not access the terminal as I an unable to boot into Ubuntu at all. I am in a really bad way. I have had to resort back to using Windows which I am not very pleased with!

    Good catch on memtest...can you boot off of a live cd and post the output of the command?

    When I boot from the live cd it put me into what appears to be fresh install of ubuntu. I don't think it will help but here is the results of the commands that were posted.

    Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x39d23778

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 29189 234457056+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda2 29189 30402 9739264 7 HPFS/NTFS

    Disk /dev/sdb: 2000 MB, 2000748032 bytes
    64 heads, 63 sectors/track, 969 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 4032 * 512 = 2064384 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x00000000

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 1 969 1953439+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
